Full Version: Screen Blanking On Nokia Phones
Skyfire Forums > General > Phone-specific issues

A number of people have mentioned the backlight timing out or the screen going blank when using Skyfire with their Nokia phones. This can be especially bothersome when watching video; a tap of a key or directional control is required periodically to keep the display on.

Screen blanking and backlight timeout is controlled at the OS level rather than by an application like Skyfire. Most Nokia users find they can adjust the timeout settings to their liking.

However, some users, especially users of the Nokia E71x, find the timeouts problems are not fixed by adjusting the phone settings. In those cases a third-party utility, such as Light Control, usually does the job.

Thanks for that Dave. Do you know the name of any free third-party light control software?

Is "Light Control" a free utility? I've not tried it personally, but here's a review:

Oh yes, Light Control is free but it's unsigned so I need a PC to install it. I'll try it tomorrow.

8/2010 the fix folks is simple. Flashlight by Offscreen technologies, free in the ovi store. Run it in the background, and the phone backlight will not turn off until you close it or the batteries die. Works with nokia 5230 s60 v5 and skyfire 1.5beta, spb tv and all other apps you'd like the backlight to never turn off or dim.

I was put onto this little bit of software and it's not only resolved the issue with the back light on my Nokia N97, but allows me to play games that require a bit of time to think between moves and decisions. It's called SmartLight I tried it, and decided to buy it because it really solved the back light issue for me. One user suggested Offscreen's flashLight, however SmartLight will know when you have an application running or a menu in focus, and keep the back light on. Go back to standby screen and the light will automatically revert to the phones default setting. The software currently supports a number of different phones, for which you have to check your phone's compatibility before purchase.
