In the future I would like to see SF support the Palm Operating System. Especially when Palm-Pre browser will not support flash. What are your thoughts?

I am negative on this. I think that Skyfire should select carefully the OSes and platforms it can support and should not dilute its development effort in a new OS of unknown fate. The Pre may do well, but the drop in the price of iPhone, a new iPhone and a deluge of Winmo phones this summer would certainly limit its appeal

Much like Android, there is a lot of hype for Web OS, however with only one announced device that will be running it (AFAIK) there wouldn't seem to be too much draw for developers

From a development standpoint I imagine that it would be important to evaluate the success of a new OS before developing software. It would also help if it were available on more than one device for one carrier. We don't know yet how the Pre will actually fair. It could be huge spawning a whole slew of clones and successive devices, or it could flop. All we have (for the next few hours at least) is hype

Phil E,

I have to agree with Paco in reference to the development standpoint. The good news is that it won't be long until flash becomes a major contribution to the WEB-OS. I will leave it in the hands of this fantastic Skyfire team to possibly in the future develop this feature.

I think it would make most sense to support the mobile OS's with the best usability. That would mean Iphone, blackberry OS, android, and web OS.

Iphone is off the table, and most stories I read these days suggest Nokia is struggling, so bump Symbian down in priority. Windows mobile is an embarrassment to Microsoft (I say this as an owner of an HTC Tilt running win mobile 6.1). I wouldn't count MS out considering win mobile 7 is supposed to debut next year, but it's hard for me to imagine them maintaining market share in the meantime. By the time 7 comes out it may be too late to win back customers, even if it is a quality offering.

On the other hand MS Internet Explorer for mobile phones is so bad, it's probably the easiest market to seduce into using and loving Skyfire.

Microsoft bashing aside, I think Skyfire's greatest strength is the ability to play flash. All of the aforementioned platforms have respectable browsers for mobile internet access, but they are all missing flash video support. HTC Hero efforts are a harbinger of change. It's browser does support flash, but I've read that the performance is horrible. It probably wont be but one or two more years until cell phone networks, mobile hardware and flash support is solid. Skyfire should take advantage of these weaknesses now by supporting the top OSes.

I am eying replacements for my phone, and after disappointing early reviews of the HTC Hero, and a general dislike for some aspects of Apple's business model, I consider the Palm Pre a frontrunner. I've tried the OS out and I think it has staying power even if the Pre doesn't. I would love to see Skyfire on Pre.

having used WM since win CE 2002 it's perfectly useable for me and I wouldn't consider it an embarrassment. Granted, PIE could use some updating, however I also have Opera Mobile, Skyfire, and Fennec installed on my Touch Pro at the moment. Both Skyfire and Opera Mobile have their strong suits and their drawbacks ( I almost never use PIE, and Fennec isn't inteneded to be a browser for every day use at the moment). The same description also fits well when you consider the OS, each has it's own strengths and it's own faults. With new android devices due to come out soon it stands a chance of becoming a player.

And even though Symbian platforms are losing market share, they still occupy the largest percentage (41%) as of march

Now skyfire is rocking the android, any idea when it will grace Palm's webos?

As already mentioned, When there are more devices that support the Palm Pre Web OS.

Guys,

Good evening. Thank you all for your input. I know we are very interested in skyfire being on-board with web-os, and we would truely enjoy it. We just have to wait and see what happens next?

Have a great weekend.
