Hey Guys,

Any news in the works for Blackberry to utilize Skyfire? I LOVE the Skyfire web broswer, and I hope it comes in the near future. I know the Blackberry works with Opera Mini. But it can not touch SKYFIRE! Please update me!

Support for Blackberry is definitely something that has been considered, but we don't have any news at this time.

I hope it's sooner rather than later, it would be awesome to see SkyFire on the BB Storm... I know a lot of users would love to see it come to BB, it's basically just Java right? And this could open up Skyfire to a LOT of other phones too.... I hope the good folks at Skyfire are or will be working on this soon.....

What's just java? Skyfire isn't java

I think the concept here is Java as a write once, run anywhere technology. I don't know much about Java ME development but I would assume it is not as simple as that. I suspect most Blackberry developers write to the Blackberry OS rather than Java ME apps.
Gryffyn
Yeah, Skyfire is a native Windows Mobile and Symbian app, not Java. And yeah, J2ME/Java is meant to be cross platform, but at the cost of the overhead of running a Java virtual machine to interpret the Java app. Essentially a mini emulator (virtual machine = emulator, give or take).

If Skyfire put out a Java version, it could run on a lot of different devices, but I'm afraid that most of the Java devices out there just won't have the resources to handle Skyfire + Java Virtual Machine. My old Samsung A900 would do Java (had Opera and Teashark on it) but it had micro amounts of memory. Far less than the 10MB, give or take, that Skyfire needs by itself.

The only major consideration I can think of when porting is taking into account the scree dimensions. But there could be other things that need to be tweaked when using a Java app on different devices.

Ever since went from Windows Mobile to blackberry, the only app I've missed is Skyfire! Nothing Rim has can touch it. I actually am considering going back to the windows mobile world with there clunky take forever to send/receive email phones. Maybe Skyfire can save me from that and bring a better browser to my Blackberry. I hope they have a beta soon, if they do Sign Me UP!

you've apparently never had an exchange account. Personally I prefer a phone that doesn't rely solely on one server farm. And I can't access my Army email with a blackberry anyway (they have their own blackberry server with government issue blackberrys for that...)
no specific word on BB support yet, just be patient

I completely agree. Giving up Skyfire was a big negative for going from my Windows Mobile phone to my BlackBerry. It looks like there will be some love for a few models. I hope it opens up for the Storm eventually. I love my touchscreen BlackBerry but Skyfire would make it that much nicer!

I'm am thinking about getting the BB bold and everyone seems to love it. But the browser sucks, so I'm not sure that I want it. I'm glad to hear that skyfire is in the works for BB. I guess I'll go ahead and take the leap of faith into the blackberry world. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long for skyfire to be available.

When Skyfire's BB alpha was leaked it put a huge load on Skyfire's servers, because of that happening Skyfire on the BB has came to a halt.

I'd worry more about creating a version of skyfire for Android. I know there are a lot of blackberry users out there but android seems to be the up and coming OS.

There are thousands of apps for android but none that lets you stream audio/video like skyfire does (well... when skyfire works anyway, half the time the audio/video is so out of sync the video is unwatchable and half the video sites have stopped working in skyfire).

I've been putting off getting a new phone for awhile because flash streaming is a huge consideration for me. unfortunately, my phone is getting old and it's time for a change. Probably going to switch to an android phone. I'll miss being able to stream flash but at least my android phone will still have sprint tv so I'll be able to watch my favorite channels like nfl network, espn, etc.

Not sure if you are stating facts from the Dev team at Skyfire, but from what i've read on numerous tech sites, Skyfire shut down the Blackberry servers and then started them up again with more strict regulations so no one can get in.

This is what I read on sites, and they also posted that there was another update to the alpha. Now, that was last year, so other than that, I haven't heard anything -- either becuase they've kept a tight lid on it, or becuase they have ceased all together.

My friend who has a Blackberry told me that he heard a podcast with Raj, a tech at Skyfire, stating that the Blackberry is a very "challenging" platform, and hopefully "sometime next year" it will come out in open beta. This was in October, if i'm correct. Moble Beyond is the site.
